Its creators say it is designed for makers and geeks, and has the expandability of an x86 SBC and the power of a micro server.

They write:

“Create a multimedia server that allows you to seamlessly access media files from multiple devices at home, whether it’s the 20MB/s bitrate new episode on your 75-inch TV or clip of your dog on your old iPhone.

If you are a Hi-Res audiophile, it is also a good choice to set up a music server on ZimaBoard to manage all your music from multiple digital sources, including Tidal, Qobuz, HDD, USB, iTunes, and live radio. Just sort them into a neat customized interface, collect and update your albums, and enjoy.”

Software

The idea, for example, is that you can build a personal cloud to have 100% control over your own data and also have the capability to expand to 12TB disk space as that data grows. It’s also optimised for 24X7 working, with its low power consumption and small form factor.

There’s also a software router – which is new to me – and it is compatible with systems such as OpenWRT and pfSense.

KickStarter

It’s currently on KickStarter and has busted it’s targets: it’s raised £188,675, against a goal of £4,626 goal, from 1,606 backers with 10 days still to go at time of writing.

An Early Bird ZimaBoard 216, offering 20% off, will cost around £57.

There’s also a ZimaBoard 832 devkit, costing around £258. It includes:

  • 2× ZimaBoard 832

  • 2× 12V/3A Power Adapter

  • PCIe to 2.5 Gbe Ethernet

  • PCIe to 4 Channel USB Adapter

  • PCIe to 5 Channels SATA

  • PCIe to NVMe SSD Adapter

  • PCIe to WiFi 6

Estimated deliveries for the ZimaBoard are July 2021.
